Despite this, he made many efforts to study prints or works of Italian masters available in northern Europe. Jordaens never made the traditional trip to Italy to study classical and Renaissance art. He lived and worked here until his death in 1678. He would then later buy the adjoining house to expand his household and workspace in 1639, mimicking Rubens’s house built two decades earlier. In 1618, Jordaens bought a house in Hoogstraat (the area in Antwerp that he grew up in). In the same year as his entry into the guild, 1616, he married his teacher’s eldest daughter, Anna Catharina van Noort, with whom he had three children. although examples of his earliest watercolor works are no longer extant. Like Rubens, he studied under Adam van Noort, who was his only teacher. Jordaens familiarity with biblical subjects is evident in his many religious paintings, and his personal interaction with the Bible was strengthened by his later conversion from Catholicism to Protestantism. This assumption is supported by his clear handwriting, his competence in French and in his knowledge of mythology. It can be assumed that he received the advantages of the education usually provided for children of his social class. ![]() ![]() Kubrick, famous for being a perfectionist and for frequently forcing his actors to do dozens and dozens of takes, made Douglas Rain sing "Daisy Bell" over and over again in a variety of ways, so that he could get it just right. Clarke witnessed a demonstration of this computer's unusual talent during a visit to Bell Labs, and he was so captivated by it that he decided to incorporate the song into his novel. The singer was an IBM 7094 mainframe computer at Bell Laboratories. The reason that it was chosen as the song HAL would sing was because, in our real world, it was the first song to ever be "sung" by computerized speech. If you couldn't identify the tune though HAL's distorted wailing, it's called "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)," a song from all the way back in 1892. Such a machine could eventually become as incomprehensible as a human being, and could, of course, have a nervous breakdown - as HAL did in the film." Most advanced computer theorists believe that once you have a computer which is more intelligent than man and capable of learning by experience, it's inevitable that it will develop an equivalent range of emotional reactions - fear, love, hate, envy, etc. In an interview, Stanley Kubrick gave a quote which supports this reading, saying, "In the specific case of HAL, he had an acute emotional crisis because he could not accept evidence of his own fallibility. HAL then killed the crew in self-defense, or perhaps murder with aggravated circumstances, depending on your perspective. However, this one error led to Dave and Frank thinking that HAL was untrustworthy and needed to be disconnected. In this reading, this is the only true malfunction HAL has throughout the film. Regardless, Rain's voice was perfect for the eerily calm AI.Īnother, slightly more complex version of this idea was that HAL had a different, much smaller glitch when he reported to Dave that there was a problem with the ship's antenna. And in his case, that was Canada. Perhaps this common perception that Canadian accents are difficult to place for Americans is why they manage to get work so often as news anchors in the United States. Yet it turns out that Rain, like everyone, did come from a specific place. He was initially considering using Rain as the narrator for the 2001: A Space Odyssey, but once he decided to not include any narration in the film, Kubrick realized that Rain's eerily calm delivery and difficult to place " bland mid-Atlantic accent" were exactly what he was looking for in a voice for HAL. In the end, Kubrick settled on Douglas Rain, who had previously narrated a 1960 documentary called Universe, which Kubrick apparently liked a great deal. To find a new HAL, Kubrick sent out set assistant Benn Reyes to find an actor with a voice that would be "neither patronizing, nor is it intimidating, nor is it pompous, overly dramatic or actorish. ![]() ![]() Orlean also smokes constantly throughout the movie, bringing to mind Obama’s admission that he smoked nine cigarettes a day while in the White House. A close-up of a desk photo shows President Orlean wrapped in the arms of Bill Clinton. Representing American politics at its worst is President Orlean, a character definitely meant to conjure up a female version of Donald Trump, but also, for the attentive viewer, a mashup of Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama. The imminent impact of a large comet is just this film’s context for getting its characters-and us-to reflect on how we would live, what we would do, if we knew that our own lives, and in fact the existence of the entire planet, were about to expire in just three more hours.Īs heavy-handed as the satire sometimes is in this film, most of the characters are critiqued gently, as if some omniscient being is laughing at their real foibles, while also understanding their root causes. But, as we all know, death is one of the few certainties in life. Yes, that is the darkly funny but true context for the film.Īt one point, American President Orlean (Meryl Streep) exclaims, “You can't go around saying to people that there's a 100% chance that they're going to die.” Her point seems to be that people prefer a comfortable lie over the uncomfortable truth. I think, at heart, it is a memento mori, Latin for “remember death.” What does it mean to live well and choose well, even when the world is ending and you are about to die? Because COVID or not, climate change or not, current disaster averted or not, there is a 100% chance we are all going to die. Many critics seem to have missed the deeper layers of this film. The film is much more than a satire, though. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as a scientist and doctoral student from Michigan State University who discover a comet that is on a collision course with planet earth, the film is a satire of American politics, the news media, social media, Hollywood, technology, big business, and yes, even the very scientists who attempt to warn the rest of the world about the latest impending disaster. It also has the honor of instigating another shared cultural moment as many Americans have watched this trending movie at the end of the holiday season, when the spread of Omicron and the onset of extreme weather across the country have induced people to stay home. It’s an interesting fact of our times that, despite the meteoric rise in cosmetic procedures and filtered imagery, we often conflate inauthenticity with maleficence. ![]() “Looking fake for example, in some circles, is associated with inauthenticity.” “As audiences become savvier at detecting photoshopping and filters, there are often calls for greater authenticity: that people who show their true selves and flaws are celebrated as more ‘real’ than those who are filtered and nipped and tucked” says Dr Lauren Rosewarne. Without it, a person’s humanness, or relatability, collapses, leaving us suspicious. Like keeping a couple of soft lines left around the eyes though the forehead may have Botox. The aesthetic to aspire to, then, is a kind of imperfect perfection. “We also add translucency to the edges of the teeth to give them a more natural appearance.” We use gradient shading, so it is not all one colour.” he says. “To guard against this, we add different features to each of the veneers, so they aren’t just one block of porcelain. ![]() ![]() ![]() We design activities that are hands-on, open ended and require thinking outside the box. Investing in the one right drone company now, one that is successful in capturing a significant part of the forecasted growth and the large future market, can bring attractive or even massive returns. The compound annual growth rate of the drone industry is estimated to be around 20% from now. One of many online sources predicts the total market size for drones to reach over $55 billion in annual revenue by 2027. With only one holding in the drone space, chances are that it will turn out not to be the best pick. When buying shares in AgEagle or any other single drone company stock, it's just one pick from the contenders for a big prize further out in the future. The above finding about the joint movements of the stock of several drone companies is the basis for the first half of my investment thesis for AgEagle. If an investor only picks one holding in the drone industry, there's a higher chance of not having a long-term winner in the portfolio. In that way, there's a higher chance that the long-term winners are in the portfolio. Investors think that it's better to spread the risk and take a stake in a number of drone companies. They do so because they find it hard to predict which of the drone companies will turn out to be the best investment in a few years from now. There's likely to be a significant number of investors, who buy and sell shares of several drone companies simultaneously. A plausible explanation exists for the joint movement. There's no 100% guarantee, but, in my opinion, it's hard to see how it could be coincidental. In the comment thread with one of my previous articles, "Alpine 4 Technologies: Acquisition Of Drone Businesses Leads To Excessive Rally", there has been discussions between readers if the simultaneous movement of drone stocks is a coincidence or not. They all started rising towards the end of 2020, they all reached a peak in February 2021 and they all fell back significantly from that peak until now.
